![I just finished reading We Will Rest by Tricia Hersey and wow wow wow, it was so deeply wonderful. Reading it felt like breathing.
Here is one of the quotes I wrote down from it that musicians need to hear:
“If you don’t participate in the heavy lifting that grind culture demands and things fall apart because of this, let it fall. Trust your body.”
Trust your body. Let it fall.
Maybe now is a good time to ask ourselves, where are we doing heavy lifting in our lives that seems urgent on the outside but feels small and grating on the inside?
Is there anywhere that you’re creating artificial urgency? Or taking anything too seriously?
🌻
I don’t love the urgency that corporations spew on Black Friday and year-round, so I like to support small [slow, intentional] businesses as much as possible.

![When I was a kid, my favorite thing to do was arts & crafts. My older next-door neighbor taught me how to sew, I loved to draw in my sketchbook and make things out of paper, I crocheted tiny wallets and scarves, and I took refuge in art classes in high school.
Since childhood, I’ve always considered myself an artist, but it’s only been since I’ve been an adult that I’ve questioned my label. It’s not that I don’t think I’m an artist — I firmly believe that anyone who creates things (music, poetry, paintings, fiber arts, food etc.) is an artist, and that anyone can claim that label. But I’ve found myself under-qualifying my abilities when I tell people about my current visual art endeavors.
I draw parallels between my experience as an amateur artist and my adult students’ experience as amateur musicians. I hear it in their voices, dripping with disappointment when they recall the child prodigy flutist they listened to on YouTube, or when they exclaim, “Well, I’m not trying to be a professional musician or anything [so what I’m doing doesn’t count as music]...”
If you’re an amateur in anything, this is for you. Link in bio to read the post.
