2 years ago in March 2023, I launched the Mindful Practice Room, a community practice space I had been dreaming up for many months. Since then, we’ve had around 200 practice sessions (!!) with themes of perfectionism, deep focus, love for our music, and much more.

It is with gratitude that I announce the end of this chapter: March 2025 was the last month of the Mindful Practice Room. While it’s time for me to say goodbye so that I can reallocate my energy to other projects, I can’t help but look back in appreciation of everyone who joined and supported this space over the last 2 years.

I’ve felt like I finished a good book. It’s bittersweet to close the cover on the Mindful Practice Room. The culmination of this project and every person who participated with their thoughtfulness and care has left a poignant mark on my consciousness and my desire to continue creating meaningful spaces for artists. It might not be goodbye forever, but for now, it’s time to pause.

“In reality, offering care to the public is a loving course of life.”

I just framed this blackout poem I made some months ago. I love making music and teaching, but/and, this message is central to what I do. I don’t care if you can play the notes and rhythms today. I care that you care, and I care for you.

Infuse care into every note, brushstroke, photograph, poem, conversation. This will get us far.

One or two winters ago, I listened to the audiobook Wintering by Katherine May. When I listen to audiobooks, I usually either retain most of the concepts like a sponge, or the words flow through me like I’m a colander as if I didn’t even hear it. Wintering was a rare book for me in that I can’t remember a single detail but the premise deeply embedded itself into my noggin and rewired my brain.

Throughout all of my schooling, I battled with the cold, quietness of winter. School didn’t stop, and neither did late nights of studying and practicing and willing myself out of the house for evening extracurriculars even though my body begged me to stay home and sleep under a thick blanket.

The patterns were unnatural, and I was forced to distrust my body because the hamster wheel kept spinning and I had to get back on.

Fast forward to post-school life, it might not have been until I read Wintering that I realized I was still wired as if I had to keep up the same level of productivity throughout each month of the year, even though I’ve had the privilege of working for myself from home.

Winter is supposed to be for hibernation. It’s for soup and reading and staying in. I used to hate winter, but I’m (only finally) beginning to embrace its slowness.

It’s hard to deal with the dissonance of a season meant for rest and less when there are auditions and midterms and high stakes events on the agenda in the coming months. What can we do?

As leaders and teachers, we can allow ample time for rest and space for achieving only what’s necessary. As students, we can take a step back from extraneous responsibilities we’ve assigned ourselves and prioritize rest, EVEN IF it comes at a cost.

If you’re celebrating the holidays coming up, I hope you give yourself the gift necessity of rest. Even if it feels like you can’t.

The thing I love about this sentence is that it gives us the freedom to fail or half-fail or make mistakes or even do something great that just… doesn’t work. It’s ok for things to not work. That’s how learning happens. Isn’t that freeing?

September was eventful. I performed at my local Town Day a few weeks ago on the most cloudless day I’ve ever experienced. I’ve been listening to a lot of Fiona Apple and eating chocolate chip banana bread. I got my vaccines and recovered under many cozy blankets.

Here are some thoughts on performing and intentional repetition.

Here are some thoughts on performing and intentional repetition.

Repetition. Not just repetition for the sake of “I was told I need to practice more so I’ll just play the same thing over and over again even though it’s not getting any easier to play” but intentional repetition like this.

Intentional repetition leads to ease of fingers, tone, breath, and brain. In other words, the freedom to make expressive music.

There is a wealth of practice material for beginner flutists, and even more for advanced flutists. Some materials that claim to be appropriate for a wide range of levels are simple in concept, but unapproachable in practice. As a teacher, I notice this daily.

I created this practice guide with the intent that you will grow out of it, but only after going through it. You know the phrase, “you can’t go over it, you can’t go around it, you have to go through it”? That’s what this practice guide is. In my experience, there are a lot of gaps in the learning process for intermediate flutists. Many individual flute teachers have ways of moving their students through this in-between level, but it’s pretty common that the advice for musicians is a simple, “practice more!”

Practicing “more” without intention includes a lot of unnecessary frustration and learning bad habits. If musicians haven’t embodied healthy practice habits within the first few years of picking up an instrument, it’s unlikely that a few verbal tips about practice strategies will do much to adjust their process.

When I wrote out this guide, I had human nature in mind. I notice the tendency of my students to look at a scale sheet, play a scale, make a mistake in the middle, and start at the beginning, make a mistake, start at the beginning, make a mistake, start at the beginning... you see where I’m going with this. Or, play a 2 octave scale, slow down at the top near the high notes and then restart. As many times as I tell my students now (and as many times as my teachers told me when I was younger) to slow down, and repeat the parts that are hard, not just the parts that are easy, humans have a hard time with this type of mindful practice, at least until they garner enough success that it sticks with them. So I wrote out each measure with the level of intention I want my students to use when they’re learning or refining unfamiliar and uncomfortable ranges and keys. Intentional repetition leads to freedom.

I had a middle school flute student who wanted to audition for district band for the first time. Because the decision was made on short notice, we suddenly had to learn from high G to high C for several 2 octave major scales and the 3 octave chromatic scale in less than two months.

Despite my efforts to get her to slow down her scales and break down the third octave, she was much like I was as a young flutist: determined, but inefficiently overzealous with speed.

Her required scale sheet was written in eighth and sixteenth notes which, before you know better, means “fast.” Even after we successfully tried alternative strategies for playing the scales with comfort and accuracy, when she was on her own, she barrelled through, full speed ahead, without much control and with plenty of errors. She just really wanted to play what was on the page.

It wasn’t until a few months later that I had the time to flock to Sibelius to combine my desire for students to practice step-by-step, and their craving to play what’s on the page with success and ease.

I started with the 2 octave Bb Major scale, and then created stand-alone studies for the rest of the major and chromatic scales. I wrote each study with detailed attention to the challenges of each key to achieve familiarity, comfort, control, and accuracy.
When I tried it with her for the first time, my heart rate calmed as she carefully played through each measure with steady focus and clarity. I was even more pleased when she said she liked practicing scales this way, and I could tell from her calm demeanor that it was satisfying to play successfully in a register that usually sounds frantic.
And so it was born! The 2 Octave Scale Practice Guide: Progressive Range Studies for Flute!

These studies are the stepping stones every flutist needs in their quest to comfortably play their 2 octave scales, ESPECIALLY the “hard” ones (the high ones and the many sharps/flats ones).

When I was a kid, my favorite thing to do was arts & crafts. My older next-door neighbor taught me how to sew, I loved to draw in my sketchbook and make things out of paper, I crocheted tiny wallets and scarves, and I took refuge in art classes in high school.

Since childhood, I’ve always considered myself an artist, but it’s only been since I’ve been an adult that I’ve questioned my label. It’s not that I don’t think I’m an artist — I firmly believe that anyone who creates things (music, poetry, paintings, fiber arts, food etc.) is an artist, and that anyone can claim that label. But I’ve found myself under-qualifying my abilities when I tell people about my current visual art endeavors.

I draw parallels between my experience as an amateur artist and my adult students’ experience as amateur musicians. I hear it in their voices, dripping with disappointment when they recall the child prodigy flutist they listened to on YouTube, or when they exclaim, “Well, I’m not trying to be a professional musician or anything [so what I’m doing doesn’t count as music]...”

No. 5 is bouncy, light, and filled with scale and arpeggio patterns and chromatic neighbor tones spanning over 2 octaves. I took this one and transposed it into all 12 Major keys as an engaging way to practice scales and arpeggios with musicality and style.

This exercise will be especially helpful for you to:
- become more comfortable and familiar with all keys
- improve technique through satisfying musical examples

“How do I build healthy practice habits?”

As much as I love writing about this stuff, the infinite layers of nuance make it almost impossible to click “publish” on a blog draft because there is so much more I want to add.

As a flutist who has worked intensely to be a skillful musician and a teacher who has worked fiercely to be an encouraging, practical, and compassionate understander of the humans in front of me, I feel the endless search for balance between discipline and grace, persistence and rest. There is room for all of it in the human artistic experience, but there is not room for all of it in a single blog post.

That’s the only reassurance you truly need.
There’s a practice. The practice is proven, and you’ve embraced it.
Now, all that’s needed is more.
More time, more cycles, more bravery, more process. More of you. Much more of you. More idiosyncrasy, more genre, more seeing, more generosity. More learning.
